Artist Books can simply be described as a medium of handmade books made by artists. The book form may be used by the artist-maker conceptually, as a format for the presentation of their printed or handwritten text, or sculpturally by utilizing non-traditional structures, such as the pop-up book, to present a 3-D visual narrative. My artist books cross fine binding with alternative structure, and are more holistic in recent years as I write and illustrate my own texts for binding.

Non-traditional binding structures, such as the lap-case in leather, have given me freedom to play with a visual text or narrative. Many other structures I use for these books have developed from teaching students, or from working on editions, and make the process of creating a holistic binding from text to covering more immediate than a traditional laced-on boards binding.
